WEARING HIGH HEELS AMONG WOMEN

INTRODUCTION

Have you ever wondered that wearing a “towering footwear” or high heels will cause much severe side effects than flats wearers? Nevertheless, only die-hard fashionistas appear to be at risk. Most women admit high heels make their feet hurt, but they tolerate the discomfort in order to look taller, stylish and more professional. Unfortunately, high heels actually may cause enough changes in the feet to impair their proper function. The whole body can all suffer from the high heels preferences. Some of the problems that may occur because of wearing high heels are muscle and tendon changes of the leg, bad body posture, lower-back pain, and pain in the ball of foot or Metatarsalgia. In addition, these problems have their respective solutions.

BODY

A.                There are many problems occurred when wearing high heels towards women.

AA.      One of the common side effects of wearing high heels for women is a                     bad body posture.
            1)         It will contribute to bad postural problem or poor body                                alignment.
i)              According to Terence (2008), the lower part of the body      bend forward and the upper part of the body must lean        back to maintain balance, and it is not the body’s       normal standing position.
ii)            As mentioned by Greene (2009), wearing a high heel            may lead to a full-body makeover, which causes the            chest throws outward and shape of buttocks change.
AB.      Wearing a high heels will also lead to lower-back pain.
                                    1)         Excessive use of high heels can also put women at risk of                                                     having lower-back pain.
i)                    According to Terence (2008), poor body alignment may lead to lower-back pain. The heel causes the body to pitch forward more than normal, putting excess pressure on the back.
AC.      Another bad effect of wearing a high heels for women is pain in the                                    ball of         foot or Metatarsalgia.
1)                  The higher the heel, the greater the pressure on the ball of the foot.
i)                    As mentioned by Durham (2010), wearing high heels and forcing the foot into a narrow, pointed shoes can put extra stress on the ball of foot which will lead to Metatarsalgia since all of the body’s weight rests there.
AD.      The other side effect of wearing high heels for women is it will cause                                  muscle and tendon changes of the leg.
1)                  The fibers in the calf muscles will shrink and the Achilles tendons thicken and lengthen. (Klein, 2010)
i)                    According to Klein (2010), fibers in the calf muscles will shrink by thirteen percent and the Achilles tendons thicken and lengthen by twenty-two percent if women wear two inches high heels or higher, more than five times a week.

B.                 There are many solutions to overcome the respective problems due to wearing high heels among women.

BA.      One of the best way to slightly overcome the bad postural problem                                     from getting worse is by choosing shoes with a wide heel which offers                   good stability.
            1)         Women should avoid wearing pointed shoes and choose                              shoes with a wide heel in order to maintain good                                                stability and body posture when standing and walking.
BB.       One of the ways to solve lower-back pain problem is keep away from                     wearing high heels too often.
1)            It is recommended to wear high heels just for special occasion         and even then only a heel height of one and a half inches.
i)                    As suggested by Dr. Cronin (2012), only wear high heels once or twice a week to overcome lower-back pain.
ii)                  Dr. Cronin (2012) also recommended that women must take out the high heels whenever possible, such as when sitting at the desk.
BC.       The problem of having pain in the ball of foot or Metatarsalgia can be                                 solved by a few solutions.
1)                  Try to find shoes that “contour” to the arch and distribute body weight over the entire foot, not just the ball of the foot.
i)                    As recommended by Vasyli (2012), it is best to choose well-constructed quality shoes, especially those that have shock absorbing materials in the ball of foot, or even by using an insert like Orthaheel.
2)                  Women should change shoe styles to low or flatter heels.
i)                    As mentioned by Vasyli (2012), doctors actually suggest wearing shoes with a slight heel, especially flats.
BD.      The solutions to overcome the problem of muscle and tendon changes                                 of the leg is by stretching the muscles and tendons frequently.
1)                  Women should stretch frequently to keep the muscles and tendons strong.
i)                    As recommended by Garber (2010), loop a resistance band using belt or towel around the top of foot while sitting and then, gently pull back on the band while pushing against it with the toes.
ii)                  Garber (2010) also recommended to pick things up with toes which will help to strengthen the feet.

CONCLUSION

To sum up, wearing high heels can provide an image boost up that many women find attractive. In spite of this, forcing the feet into towering, narrow, pointed shoes and wearing them for too long not even can cause foot pain but also contribute to other problems for the body. There are many consequences and also solutions of wearing a high heel among women respectively such as pain in the ball of foot or Metatarsalgia, lower-back pain, bad postural problem or body alignment, and also muscle and tendon changes of the leg. As suggestion, make sure the heels are of moderate proportions, not the towering variety. Plus, not considering whether they have heels or not, always rotate the shoes to avoid wearing the high heels for a long period of time. Your feet and body will thank you, women! What’s more, you will absolutely save money instead of spend so much on trips to the podiatrist’s office.

  1. You might want to explain the medical term used such as 'Metatarsalgia' by using your own word
